What a PLC Programmer Actually Does
A PLC programmer turns a machine specification into working control logic. They write new programs, simulate and test them, commission them on the plant floor, and hand over documentation that maintenance teams can rely on for years.
Typical work includes:
- Developing control logic from P&IDs and functional specifications, structuring programs into routines, writing ladder logic and structured text, and building HMI screens.
- Commissioning on site: downloading code, loop‑checking I/O against electrical drawings, monitoring live rung status, and resolving discrepancies.
- Documenting code: rung comments, revision notes, handover sheets, ensuring maintainability.
- Co‑ordinating with electrical designers for safety‑relay wiring and other integration tasks.
